The International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) has just published a detailed dossier on alleged war criminal Shavendra Silva. Silva was recently appointed Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army.

In a press release ITJP says that, in light of all the evidence presented, Silva should be suspended and charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity. “The dossier presents the most extensive body of evidence against him — or any Sri Lankan war-time commander — to date.”

Unsurprisingly, instead of holding people like Silva accountable, President Maithripala Sirisena has been promoting them. That’s another reminder that there’s no chance of real accountability through a Sri Lankan judicial process. An international mechanism is what’s urgently needed.
