I’m running for a spot on the Takoma Park Silver Spring Food Co-op’s board. The co-op is such a special Takoma institution; I couldn’t be more excited.

I have been active with the co-op for years — both as a volunteer and, more recently, as a worker. I helped the co-op launch its blog by editing articles and writing a number of staff profiles. I also tabled for various events as a volunteer.

And then at the outset of the pandemic, the store was in need of workers with the transition to online orders and the general pandemic response. So I joined the team as a temporary worker. I stocked shelves. I filled online orders for customers. I answered customer questions on the phone. I facilitated pickups for customers in the parking lot. The co-op staff is a terrific team and it was great to work there.

From the emphasis on local and ethically-sourced food to providing good jobs to friends and neighbors to partnering with mission-driven nonprofits — the co-op exemplifies the best of Takoma.
