Trump Needs to Go. His Enablers Do Too.

Global authoritarianism is on the march. The trends are moving in the wrong direction. There are no leaders. There is no plan. And, there’s a once-in-a-century pandemic. What could go wrong?

I have spent a lot of time thinking about democracy in other countries. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about semi-authoritarian regimes and outright dictatorships. Demagogues. Populists. Bad people, some of whom had or have a lot charisma.

I’ve always been very interested in authoritarianism, largely because I find the concept — in theory and practice — so revolting. It’s a cancer that must be wiped out.

And now, with each passing day, I grow more worried about the future of democracy in my own country, the United States. Two years ago, I would not have said this, and I’m not suggesting that America has ever been a flawless democracy. I know the U.S. has big flaws.

I never supported Donald Trump’s candidacy. Nonetheless, after he won, I thought he deserved a chance. I thought taking a wait-and-see approach would be prudent; I know I should share that with you.

Well, I’ve waited. And, I’ve seen. And, now I’ve seen far too much.

Looking back, I understand that I had no idea how bad things could get. I never really thought that the Republican Party would become…
